My son's birthday is December 13, so to make him feel special without taking away from his day or that of the Christmas season, we decided to incorporate the two. Invites read, "Dashing through the snow in a one-horsed open sleigh, Diego's turning 1 on this special day . . ." We then included the party info, such as address, date, time, etc. We printed our invites on holiday paper. Instead of the usual birthday clown, we hired Santa and one of his Elfs to visit our party. The children loved it! We had a special seat for Santa to pass out gifts to each child (the Elf would pick up a gift which I pre-wrapped and tagged) and gave it to Santa. Once Santa called the child's name, the child then sat on Santa's lap and we snapped a picture to include in our thank you cards. Since giving is nicer than receiving, we thought this added a special touch to our party. I purchased gifts such as balls, coloring books, crayons, barbies, trucks, etc from either the 99 cents store or Target. I rented small tables and chairs (the kind they have in pre-school classes) and covered it with a christmas table cloth and had the kids decorate their very own gingerbread men with different colors of frosting (just buy white frosting and add food coloring for different colors) candies, etc. The kids used plastic knifes to decorate. I also purchased tiny terra cotta pots (about 4 inches tall) and pre-painted those red, green or gold and glued a pine cone in each of them (pine cones were free if you have or know of where you can pick some up from.) The kids glued glitter and small round balls so that they looked like small Christmas trees. Each child took theirs home as a party favor. We also served hot apple cider to all of the parents, easy recipe of: Apple Juice, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, orange slices (add all to the crock pot and your house will smell delicious!) The party was a hit.
