My son's first birthday was the week before Easter (March 22) and so we had an Easter Egg Hunt Birthday party. (We live in the south so this is usually nice shorts weather.) All of his friends' ages were within about 6 months of his and so they all needed to have the same age appropriate activities. We asked the children to bring their Easter baskets for a hunt. I knew that these little ones would not be able to hunt in the true sense of the word, and that they were too little for candy not to mention that I don't like giving candy if at all possible. We found the jumbo size eggs (about twice the size of the traditional plastic eggs) at Target and filled them with Cheerios. They were a HUGE hit because they could shake them and make music or open them and eat the contents. At the party, which was outside, we spread a huge blanket out for the little ones who weren't walking yet, and then just threw about 50 eggs all around. Each child walk around and picked them up as proud as they could be and for them (remember this was his first birthday) they really were finding them! The eggs on the big blanket were already there for the ones who were only crawling so that they didn't crawl all over the grass and ruin outfits! Those eggs were their party favors and the parents loved them because they said that they were perfect to fit toddler sized treats in on Easter morning! His cake was a little grass field with spring animals hunting Easter eggs - although I really suggest asking them to make the dye VERY LIGHT GREREN or you will have pretty green hands for about 24 hours! :o)
