My husband's immediate family is pretty big with 7 brothers and sisters who all have husbands, wives and kids. His nieces and nephews range from 16 to less than a year old. So I came up with a picnic for Easter for everyone to enjoy.
I located a very nice park that was central to everyone that has, playground, fishing pond, basketball court, sand volleyball, and even a horseshoe pit, but did not rely on these amenities to keep our family entertained only as alternatives for those that did not want to participate in the hunt and other activities I organized. I did a complete search of the world wide web and found many games and activities and narrowed it down to about 5, but before I get started with the games and the hunt, let me tell you about the bucket/baskets I made for all the kids.
First I made buckets for each child under 7 which is only 5. Actually there is one friend that is having a baby in less than a month so I made the baby a little Easter basket too. I made an orange, blue, pink, yellow, and green basket for the kids. I used Easter buckets that were in the matching color except green and yellow. I did not have or could find these colors so I used this white bucket that has an egg hunt scene on it with green grass around the whole thing. Each bucket contained coordinating color candy, bottle of bubbles, and a toy. The candy was an individual bag of M&M's, carton on whoppers, and a box of 3 molded chocolate creatures, a turtle, a snail, and a frog. The toys were different in each one of the buckets. I used a yellow baby rubber duckey, and green baby rubber froggy, a mini rubber orange truck, and a mini rubber blue truck. I put a bottle of bubble bath in the pink bucket for my niece.
Since the buckets were about 5 to 6 inches deep I used a grocery bag filled it full of crumpled newspaper as filler. I covered this with a coordinating color of tissue paper. I found a pack of 2 Easter basket cellophane bags that I put the buckets into, but these were not exactly color coordinating though. It came with coordinating ribbon to close them.
The baby's Easter basket was an actually purple flower Easter Basket that I inherited one year. I filled it with pink, purple, and baby blue plaid tissue paper. I put a purple rubber ducky with jelly beans, vibrant soft green bunny plush and a soft brown bunny plush in the basket with pairs of Easter's socks and 3 purple eggs filled with Sweet Tarts. I handed these out to the kids upon arrival incase they forgot their hunting one and also to play with the bubbles and new toy, except the bubble bath, during the picnic.
I also made 3 movie night buckets for the older kids which were andindividual popcorn holder, microwavable popcorn, box of hot tamales or mike and ikes, and a couple boxes of fun size milk duds. I made 4 other baskets for the in between kids too. I used a mini plastic Easter basket to hold a Easter party favor bag of goodies which included a can of soda, fun size Skittles, Milk Duds, Sour Patch kids, and microwave popcorn.
For the actually hunt I pulled 15 plastic eggs in 5 different colors from my inventory. I also had 2 sets of 15 on the side with candy ready incase more kids showed up than anticipated. We did end up using these too. The kids ranging from less than a year to about 6 years old hunted for only their assigned colored egg. Each group of eggs was stuffed with the exact same kind of candy to avoid any problems with one kid getting more starburst than the next kid. We only did 15 eggs each due to 1 of the participants was only 10 months and not walking and the other a 15 months and barely walking. We figured they would be tired after about the 5th egg. You can speed this up when you have a lot of kids with big prize for the one that finds all their eggs first. I did that last year and the kids loved it.
Once we were done with the hunt we started with the pretty large egg pinata with tons more candy. We did have a couple of 10 year old to teenagers who did not participate in the hunt, so the pinata was there chance to get some candy too. In fact a couple of the parents took or should I say attempted to take a swing at the pinata too. I handed out white lunch bags for the kids to fill once the whole pinata was opened up by the final swing.
In addition to the hunt and pinata we played some Easter related games. One was the Bunny Hop Race where participants hopped to the finished line just like a bunny. We did this 3 times before we actually started the race since we had quite of few people not understand how to actually bunny hop. The winner won an pre-packages Easter Basket with a water gun, bubbles, and candies. We used peeps instead of an egg for the Spoon Walk which I aptly named PEEP WALK instead. I gave each participant a plastic spoon and a peep. They had to put the peep on the spoon and the spoon in their mouth. They were told to walk one point turn around and walk back. The first one back one the prize which was another pre-packaged Easter basket. We played this 2 times, once for the kids and again for the adults. Another game was Egg Match Race which we played once for kids and once for Adults too. I took several colors of plastic eggs and put them in a spread out pile at one end. The participants had to race to them, find the color coordinating top and bottom of 10 eggs, and were done then they ran back to the finish line to put the eggs in my bucket. The prizes were a larger pre-packaged Easter Basket with more summer toys and a snack pack too.
There are so many more to play like egg roll race where you have the participants use their nose or a stick to roll the egg to the finish line. The most traditional one is Egg Toss where you partner up with someone and toss an egg to each other once then step back and toss again. This continues until you drop it or you are the last one standing. Another fun activity is the confetti egg, but is a tedious process to make.
I also had a Thank you For Trying Easter basket full of toys, playing cards, bubbles, Easter socks, bunny crazy straws, Easter Pencils, and so on. I allowed the kids to pick out something from the basket after each game if they did not win, so everyone went home with something more than just candy this year. Our menu was your typical picnic bbq fare. We had marinated butt roast, chicken thighs, mini burgers, hot dogs, pasta salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, rice krispie treats, watermelon, chips, and fruit salad. I supplied all the plates, utensils, napkins, and drinks. Of course all the condiments, like ketchup, mustard, and so on for the food were supplied too.
