For my son's 5th grade Valentine Party we decided to do a Groovy Kind Of Love 60's theme. Games: WAR: There were 21 kids in the class so we made 3 teams of 7 kids ea. We purchased several packs of cards so the kids could have a WAR tournament. You know - Make war not love. :o)Two kids would play against each other unitl 1 child has won all of the cards from the other child's deck. The last team went to a table where they tie-dyed shirts. (you can even get directions on YouTube on how to make a heart in the middle-if any of the girls want to try it.) Once the teams were done then they would switch - the tie-dyers will play against the winners of the war game and the losers of the war game will then go tie-dye. Play war until there are only two kids left to play against each other. Winner gets a grand prize! Other team members who have not tie-dyed should do so while people are being eliminated from tournament. TWISTER: Twister was a popular game in the 60's. Break the class into two teams and have a Twister contest. Team that lasts the longest will get grand prizes. If kids are getting out quickly you may want to try the best out of three. Seven,Eleven,or Dare: Before you start game come up with several funny dares and place them in a jar. Kids sit in a circle with a pair of dice. Kids take turns rolling dice - if they roll a seven or eleven then play goes to next player. If they roll anything else then they have to pick a dare out of a jar. Some of our dares were to hug the person next to you and say I love you man". We even had one where the person had to go to the class next door anad announce that they had kissed a boy/girl and "they liked it". Maybe make them walk like an egyptian or do the twist. Anything funny but safe! Food: All of our tableware came from Oriental Trading. Cute plates and napkins that have smiley faces and the words Groovy and Love on them. We made a tie-dye cake. (you can find directions for this at familyfun.com) Also we had Ben&Jerry Imagine World Peace icecream. This is icecream with little chocolate peace signs in it. We had a local bakery make sugar cookies with smiley faces and peace symbols. Some kids would rather eat cookies and icecream rather than cake an icecream. Treat Bags: We bought white handled bags (these come two for a dollar at Dollar Tree). I have a set of Stampin'Up stamps that are Hippie Birthday (comes with the funky dasiy flower a beatle car etc.). We used these to stamp the outside of the bags. We also found Groovy Valentines at Wal-Mart and we attached them to the handle and added the child's name in the "TO:" spot. This way bags are personalized. The girls' bags had peace symbol keycahins(Dollar Tree) LOVE Magic Towels(Dollar Tree)- these were cute because they had a 60's look to them 60's theme stickers heart spirograph toys(Dollar Tree) - these were popular in the 60's. Boys had some smiley face punch balloons and smiley face bouncy balls and jr. size slinkies(popular in 60's) - from Dollar Tree. All bags had smiley face fruit snacks from Wal-Mart Berry Tie-Dye Fruit By The Foot Dots candy Fun dip Necco Wafers ( all popular 60's candy). Also we added the funky packaged Now & Laters - the ones that look retro. We also ordered 60's theme playing cards for all of the kids (Oriental Trading). Of course all kids went home withtheir tie-dye t-shirt in a gallon size ziplock bag. They will be sent with instructions on how to wash these when they get home. Decorations: We made peace symbols and smiley faces and hung them from the ceiling. Also we hung a flower bead curtain in the doorway when you walk in. We couldn't find 60's table covers so we bought the bright ones in lime green and orange and we put some 60's theme sprinkles all over them. We found these at a party store. It had smiley faces daisy flowers little dots and peace symbols in it. We made signs that read "Hug a Hippie" and "Goovy Kind of Love" & "Partiers for Peace". These were hung outside in hallway and inside room. Streamers and Smiley face balloons can be used to help decorate too. This party is a fun alternative for 5th graders who are a little "iffy" about Valentines Day. You know the same old boring "theme" stuff. Enjoy!"
